Oh October, there is more to you than candy corn and haunted houses.

There is a whole new crop of in season fruits and veggies!
Why look for things that are “in season” in your region?
- You’re reducing your carbon footprint by not having food trucked cross country.
- You’re supporting local, small farmers
- Food is higher in nutrients if it hasn’t been sitting in a truck for a few weeks
- It’s being picked at the perfectly ripened point- so it’ll taste better!
If you are in New York here’s what you can find local:
Apples
Celery
Grapes
Lettuce
Potatoes
Pumpkins
Radishes
Spinach
Turnips
Winter Squash
In the mid-west? In Peak season are:
Apples
Asian pears
cabbage
Cauliflower
Garlic
Onions
Potatoes
Pumpkins
Sweet Potatoes
Are you on the West Coast? At their prime are:
Apples
Artichokes
Asian pears
Brussels Sprouts
Grapes
Pomegranates
potatoes
Sweet Potatoes
Tomatillos

Down south in NOLA? look for:
Garlic
Grapes
Okra
Peppers
Persimmons
Satsumas (pictured- it’s a mandarin orange!)
Sweet Potatoes
Turnips
If you want to check what exactly is in season in your state, check out Epicurious’ Seasonal Map and get some great recipes for ‘em while you’re at it!
Bottom line: there is far more than candy corn and snack size Twix in season… go for that candy from the ground instead.

thanks for including NOLA in your blog!
