NOLA: Get Down With Crawfish

So we are all well aware it is pretty easy to fatten up in NOLA – It’s great that my friend and I dragged our gym clothes a thousand miles for no reason. But while NOLA is famous for beignets (fried dough with powdered sugar) and bananas foster (heaven on a plate), there is another party food staple of the city that much more derriere friendly.

Say hello to my little friend:

Crawfish!

Crawfish boils are pretty standard saturday afternoon events and are fab alternatives to your typical BBQ.  The are similar to shrimp but, here’s your fact of the day: Crawfish come from freshwater as opposed to shrimp, which come from salt water.
Crawfish are usually mixed with some cajun spices and veggies like corn and potatoes. They are good sources of omega 3′s, vitamin A and D, calcium, potassium, copper and zinc. Plus for 3-4 oz they are 70 calories and 15g of protein, compared with 200 calories in the same amount of beef.
They also take time to open the shell- which usually means you eat less cuz you’re eating slower. So dolls, you know what NOLA natives say: Pinch the tail and suck the head!
