Same Same But Different: Square Watermelon

I really like watermelon. So much that I dressed up as one for Halloween. I actually considered digging it up and putting it on for a pic this morning (slash wearing it out for the day) but have decided against it for heat reasons. SO, this is bananas, and by that I mean watermelon. to be exact. Check these out and you’ll understand my fascination:

And surprisingly, they’re not freaky genetically modified watermelon; they were just grown in a box!
COOL. The concept behind square ‘melons is that they take up less room than round ones, meaning easier transportation and storage. But they don’t run cheap – they cost around $75 each! And while watermelon always takes the lead during the summer time as one of my favorite fruits, that’s a bit more then I’m willing to pay.
But on to the good stuff, a regular old watermelon costs ~$7.00 when in season – and we’re there! End of July through August is prime watermelon buying/eating time. W’melon is super water dense (about 92% h20 to be exact)- and all that agua means it has a much lower calorie content than other fruits, comin’ in at 48 calories a cup.
It’s also loaded in vitamins and minerals, and that little antioxidant that makes it RED: Lycopene. Lycopene in watermelon is the same antioxidant found in tomatoes, and is known for it’s awesome cancer-preventative properties.
So get your hands on that delish fruit for your weekend and try a spin on my fam’s fave watermelon feta salad … OR, get your hands on these rad kicks….
